Papaya milk, soy milk, tofu and fenugreek — common foods that increase breast size according to myth

Foods That Increase Breast Size: Myth vs Fact for Malaysian Women

Your auntie swears by 木瓜牛奶. Your colleague drinks soy milk every morning "for the chest". Somewhere along the way, most of us were told that foods that increase breast size are real.

This guide looks at the most common foods that increase breast size according to old wives' tales — and what the science actually says. (For creams, massage and pumps, see our guide on whether you can increase breast size naturally.) Short answer: no food has been shown to grow breast tissue.

Are there really foods that increase breast size?

Breast size and shape are mostly controlled by hormones, with genes and body weight also playing a part, and growth is usually complete by about 17. After that, food only changes your breasts the way it changes the rest of you — through weight.

The fatty tissue in your breasts is what sets breast size. Eat more than you burn and you gain fat everywhere, chest included. That is not a special effect of foods that increase breast size — it is just weight gain.

Foods that increase breast size: myth vs fact

1. Papaya with milk (木瓜牛奶)

The most famous of all foods that increase breast size, according to hawker-stall wisdom. Papaya gives you vitamin C and fibre, and milk gives calcium and protein. Neither contains anything that targets the breasts. Enjoy it as a snack — just watch the added sugar and condensed milk.

2. Soy milk, tofu and tauhu

Soy contains isoflavones, which the US National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health describes as compounds similar in structure to estrogen. Similar is not the same: there is no good evidence that soy foods change breast size. Soy is a healthy protein, not one of the foods that increase breast size — keep your soya bean drink, kurang manis.

3. Fenugreek (halba)

Halba seeds show up in curries and "lactation teas". Studies on fenugreek for breast milk have had mixed results, and nothing shows it increases breast size. Larger doses are considered unsafe during pregnancy.

4. Pueraria drinks and capsules

Thai Pueraria mirifica is often sold in "breast-up" drinks and pills. A review of eight small trials in menopausal women called the evidence inconclusive and the studies low quality, with breast pain among the reported side effects. None of the trials looked at breast size, so pueraria does not belong on any list of foods that increase breast size.

5. Confinement soups and chicken essence

Herbal chicken soups, pig trotter vinegar and red dates are part of Malaysian confinement tradition. They nourish a new mum, but any fuller chest after birth comes from pregnancy hormones and milk, not the soup.

Instead of foods that increase breast size: what food can do

Since there are no real foods that increase breast size, focus on what a good diet can do for how your chest looks and feels:

  • Protein (eggs, fish, tofu, chicken) helps build the chest muscles under your breasts when you train them.
  • Steady weight keeps your shape stable — crash diets often take inches off the chest first.
  • Less salt and sugar before your period may ease bloating and breast tenderness.
  • Fibre and water keep you full and steady, so you snack less on kuih and fried food.

Pair good food with chest exercises, good posture and a well-fitted bra — that combination does far more than any "magic" drink. Our breast firming exercises guide is a good place to start.

When to see a doctor

Talk to a doctor before taking any herbal "breast" supplement, especially if you are pregnant, breastfeeding or on medication. See one promptly if you notice a new lump or one-sided pain that does not go away.
