Woman in a soft sports bra holding a warm drink, easing sore breasts before period at home

8 Ways to Ease Sore Breasts Before Period

Every month it is the same: you take off your bra after work and sigh with relief. If sore breasts before period are making that last week of your cycle miserable, a few small changes can make it easier.

Sore breasts before period happen because hormone levels rise after ovulation and make breast tissue swell (we explain why in what causes breast tenderness before your period). The good news: most of the relief comes from simple, everyday habits.

8 ways to ease sore breasts before period

1. Get a proper bra fitting

Good support stops breasts from bouncing and pulling on tender tissue, which is a big part of sore breasts before period. Cleveland Clinic suggests a well-fitted, supportive bra and getting refitted when your size changes. Many malls offer free fittings — worth 15 minutes.

2. Switch to a soft sports bra at night

If lying down hurts, a soft, non-wired sports bra can help you sleep through sore breasts before period. An NHS breast clinic notes some women prefer one, while others feel better going without — go with what feels right.

3. Try warmth (or cold)

A warm towel or warm shower relaxes the area. Some women prefer a cold pack wrapped in a cloth. Never put ice or a hot pack directly on skin.

4. Cut back on caffeine for two weeks

Swap one of your daily kopi or teh for kopi-o kosong or plain water in the second half of your cycle. The evidence for caffeine is mixed, but it is an easy experiment to see if sore breasts before period feel lighter.

5. Go easy on salt in PMS week

Instant noodles, keropok and salted fish make the body hold on to water. Cleveland Clinic's PMS advice is to eat less salt, fat and sugar and more vegetables, fruit and whole grains.

6. Keep moving, gently

About 30 minutes of brisk walking, swimming or yoga most days helps with PMS in general. On sore days, pick low-impact moves and wear a supportive sports bra — a walk around the taman counts.

7. Ask about pain relief

Paracetamol or ibuprofen tablets, or an anti-inflammatory gel rubbed on the sore area, can take the edge off. Check with your doctor or pharmacist first, especially if you have gastric problems or take other medicines.

8. Track your cycle

Note when sore breasts before period start, how bad they feel and what you ate or drank. After two or three months you will see your pattern, and it gives your doctor useful information.

What about evening primrose oil and vitamin E?

These are often recommended, but the evidence is mixed. A six-month trial of 120 women found that pain improved in every group, but evening primrose oil did not work clearly better than a dummy oil.

Some women still say it helps, and some clinics suggest trying it for a few weeks. If you want to try any supplement, speak to your doctor first, and avoid evening primrose oil if you are pregnant or trying to conceive.

When to see a doctor about sore breasts before period

  • A new lump, or lumpiness that does not go away after your period
  • Pain in one spot or on one side that does not follow your cycle
  • Nipple discharge, especially if it is bloody
  • Redness, warmth or fever
  • Pain that lasts more than two weeks or stops you sleeping or working

Your doctor may also talk about options such as changing your birth control if symptoms are severe.
